Curcuma longa In the Zingiberaceae family.  Mature turmeric is full of beneficial compounds like curcumins and has other compounds that impart anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogen qualities when consumed.

Turmeric is very easy to grow as it requires little to no hilling.  It can be fed and watered on the same schedule as ginger. It will need to be grown on for at least 8 months to reach the brilliabnt orange colored rhizomes (full of curcumin!).  Therefore, turmeric is best suited in a greenhouse in northern climates, or a hoophouse in southern climates.

Turmeric seeding rate is 6" from seed piece to seed piece.  5# will plant about 30-35 row feet or 20-23, 15 gallon bags.  There are about 10-16 pieces in a pound so the previous info is based on average of 13 pieces in a pound.  It will vary due to differing sizes of individual turmeric pieces.
